NEW: Maximising performance in triggered USB cameras

USB2.0 Cameras

iDS Master mode USB uEyeIncreasing the rate of data transfer
via master mode

Boosting the performance of triggered cameras is now possible with the release of iDS new driver software that allows USB cameras to operate in master modes so that the camera, itself, controls the data exchange. This development means that significantly higher frame rates can be achieved when using triggered cameras.

How does master mode solution for USB uEye cameras work?
When two devices are connected via USB, the USB architecture requires one of them to act as the master, controlling data traffic on the bus. This task is usually under the direction of the PC. Peripherals, such as cameras, run in slave mode which means they can only transmit data when the host PC requests it. Consequently, a USB camera in trigger mode previously had to be set to "ready state" before each image capture.

The new master mode offers a solution that removes these USB protocol constraints.

What are the advantages of master mode?
By passing control of image data transfer to the connected cameras, maximum use is made of the USB bandwidth, allowing for very high frame rates with external triggering. The triggered frame rate now reaches the same level as it does when in live mode, as the camera now has the capacity to transfer images continuously. In Area-of-Interest (AOI) mode, where the sensor transfers only a specific part of the image, USB cameras can now process several hundred trigger pulses per second.

What other benefits will the new driver software provide?
Among the many new features and enhancements of this software package are new API functions, sample programs with source code and additional subsampling and binning modes.

How do I obtain the new driver software?
The USB master mode is included in the latest driver version 3.33 and is available as an update for all USB uEye cameras. The driver can be downloaded, free, from the manufacturer's web site: http://www.ids-imaging.com/go/ueyedrivers
